The engineer for my project asked for a "topo". I already have a boundary survey. Are they the same?

They answer different questions, and many projects need both [1].
Boundary survey:
- locates the legal property lines and corners,
- shows improvements relative to the lines, plus encroachments and, often, easements,
- is used for fences, sales, disputes and setbacks.
Topographic survey:
- maps the shape of the land: ground elevations and contours,
- shows features such as trees, buildings, pavement, drainage structures and visible utilities,
- is used for design work such as grading, drainage, septic, driveways and additions [2].
Engineers and architects usually want both, combined on one drawing, tied to a stated vertical datum. When you order, tell the surveyor what the survey is for, so the right detail and area are included.
General information only. Answers here are not a survey or legal advice, and no one here can tell you where your boundary is. For your property, hire a licensed land surveyor in your state; for legal questions, a real-estate attorney.
